ANOTHER PIONEER GONE TO REST
Sidney Harmon Epperson of Midway passed peacefully away Sunday morning, June 1st, 1913. Was taken down with pneumonia at first and recovered partially, so he be up and around some, when he took a relapse and after some (unreadable) weeks (unreadable).
He was the sone of (unreadable Epperson) and Nancy (unreadable) and was born in (unreadable) Dec 31, (unreadable). Hearing the sound of the gospel he followed (unreadable) and came to Utah in 1862 with the David Wood company. Married Mary Jane Robey in (unreadable), at Provo, Utah. Their children are; Sidney Theophilus, Charles Alonzo, Mary L., Albert, (unreadable), and Elmer Drew. Of this (unreadable), Tipton, Robert, and Elmer has passed away.
His wife and all the children living were present except Viola D. Alexander who is living in Byron, Wyo., and was unable to be here.
Besides the (unreadable) children he has 52 grandchildren and (unreadable) great grandchildren.
Settled in Provo in 1862 where he resided for seven years; moved from there to Provo Valley in 1860 and settled at the Smith Grove on Snake Creek, where with Jeremiah Robey and others he built a log house among the first on the Midway side of the river. The place was called the lower settlement. During the early Indian trouble by compromise of the people of the upper settlement they laid out a townsite half way between the two settlements and thus the new town up to the present time has been known as Midway. Was bishop of said town for a period of 10 years and its earliest pioneer. Was a member of the Utah militia; captain of Provo Valley Cavalry 3 years, when he was commissioned Major by U.S. government; Indian war veteran being captain of the Midway post.
Was an high priest and labored under Brigham Young incessantly for many years; was one of the faithful saints who went to meet the handcart company when winter overtook them; stood guard in Echo canyon for protection of the saints at the time of Johnson's army; also in the front ranks during all of the trying times of early pioneer life in Provo Valley; with John Davis and others built and run the first crude threshing machine in the valley which threshed all of our grain for many years. His patriarchal blessing said he should feed thousands, and now truly has this come to pass.
Funeral services were held June (unreadable) in the Midway 2nd ward meeting house an account of which has been previously given.
