- Two Children On the Trail in 1852
MARY JANE ROBEY AND ELIZABETH AGNES WOOD
Captain David Wood's company of approximately 260 Saints departed from Kanesville, Iowa, June 20, 1852, to cross the Plains to the Great Salt Lake Valley in fulfillment of a prophecy received by Joseph Smith for the Saints in Nauvoo: "You will go to the Rocky Mountains and become a great and mighty people."
Elizabeth Agnes Wood Mary Jane Robey
Captain David and Catherine Wood's daughter, Elizabeth (Agnes), age 16, and her friend Mary Jane Robey, the same age, along with her parents, Jeremiah and Ruth Robey, were among the children on the trail. Their journey's daily routine included rising each morning at five for prayer and attending to their chores of cooking, feeding teams, and preparing every needful thing before the sound of the bugle at seven when the train would begin the day's journey.
They were constantly on the alert to protect themselves from attacks of the Indians, especially the Pawnee tribes of the Platte, for at times they were fired upon, and attempts were made to steal their stock.
These Saints would engage in singing-and dancing in the evening before retiring. At times they would have informal concerts. When it was available, everyone feasted on buffalo. They were blessed along their journey with safety and fair health. Having been exhorted to be prayerful and thankful for their blessings, they would often recount their blessings and share their music, singing, and dancing.
Sidney H. Epperson, nineteen years of age, was among those in the David Wood company. Sidney played the violin, but preferred dancing with such charming young ladies as Mary Jane and Agnes. Mary Jane, from Virginia, would later become Sidney's wife. Her father, Jeremiah Robey, was baptized by the Prophet Joseph Smith. He also had the distinction of hanging the last door on the Nauvoo Temple.
Agnes was from Ontario, Canada, by way of Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo. She experienced persecutions against her family and the Saints. Agnes remembered the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph and his brother Hyrum, and was present when the mantle of authority fell upon Brigham Young. She later married Benjamin Mark Smith, who crossed the Plains prior to the Wood company. (All of these young pioneers, along with Benjamin Mark Smith, became my ancestors.) Sidney and Mary Jane's son Simon married Benjamin Mark and Agnes's daughter Lydia, linking all of their families to these four special young people.
Agnes, Mary Jane, Sidney, and the other young people had brought much comfort and joy to the families of their pioneer company. They were helpful to the aged, the sick, the younger children, and helped with the washing and the other chores and repairs for the wagon train. They made the journey easier for everyone as they walked across Nebraska, Wyoming, and the rugged mountains of Utah.
The long-awaited day finally arrived on September 17, 1852, when the David Wood company overlooked the Salt Lake Valley from where their prophet Brigham Young had said, "This is the right place, drive on." These weary but grateful people made their camp that night on the banks of City Creek, where they remained for a short time. Most of the party then moved on south forty miles to Provo. The beautiful Utah Valley was a joy to behold.
The Woods, Robeys, and Eppersons, along with Hyrum Oakes, Jesse McCarrel, Peter Conover and others built their log cabins on the block which is now (1986) Fifth West and First North. They plowed the black mountain soil and planted grain and gardens.
On November 7, 1853, Mary Jane Robey was married to Sidney Epperson. He called her "his girl of the Plains." They built a log house and began to raise their own family. Just fifteen months later, on February 28, 1855, Elizabeth Agnes married Benjamin (Mark) Smith.
They all witnessed the coming of the crickets and fought against them in 1854. They suffered and endured Indian wars. In 1856, some were sent to help rescue the Edward Martin hand-cart company, which was snowbound in Nebraska.
Many died coming west; over six thousand pioneers lost their lives in an effort to join with the Saints in the Rocky Mountains.
Those hard years were intensified by droughts and frost. Food was rationed, and many lived on segos, thistle roots, and berries. They helped each other, were kind and loving, and saw that no one starved.
In 1857, the federal government sent Johnston's Army, under restraining orders, against the Saints. In 1858, many Saints abandoned their homes and moved into tents in Provo. In July of 1861 Johnston's Army left.
This same year (1861) was a turning point away from strife and suffering, as life became more enjoyable and prosperous. Sidney and Mary Jane Epperson, Benjamin Mark and Agnes Smith, David Wood, Jeremiah Robey and Jesse McCarrel moved their families up Provo Canyon to the "Upper Provo Valley." They carved a road through the canyon, opening the way to what they called "heaven" in this beautiful Wasatch Valley beside Mount Timpanogos. Here Sidney later became the presiding elder, bringing two of the settlements together, and named this beautiful land Midway, Utah.
Our pioneers laid well the foundations of the West and gave us a glorious heritage.
