- An Orem man, Forrest Hugo Ferguson, 65, of 1040 S. 590 E., was killed instantly in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon near the 1100 West interchange of I-15 near Lehi.
Also injured was a young relative, Nolan F. Ferguson, 18, of the same address, who was riding in the car. He was taken to the American Fork Hospital following the crash, and was reported in fair condition late Saturday by the hospital.
The Utah Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred when Mr. Ferguson apparently mistook the southbound off-ramp which connects with the Highway 91 as on on-ramp for the freeway. His vehicle collided head-on with a southbound J.C. Penney truck operated by Joseph Lynn Saxton, 35, 1220 W. 900 N., Salt Lake City.
Mr Saxton and a passenger, Marvin Arnold, 33, of 5628 S. 4060 W., Kearns, suffered minor cuts and bruises. The Ferguson vehicle was completely demolished.
State Troopers said that the southbound off-ramp at that point is an extension of Highway 91. However, northbound traffic must pass under the freeway in order to enter the northbound lanes. Mr. Ferguson apparently proceeded straight ahead, in the belief that the route was an entrance to the freeway, troopers said. Mr. Ferguson was dead at the scene.
