Notes |
- E. A. Hug came to the United States from his native Switzerland in 1904, settling in Havelock, Nebraska. By the following year he had saved enough money from his work at the Northern Pacific Railroad shops to send for his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter Lena. The three of them lived in Havelock until 1910, when the glowing stories of earning "easy money" in farming prompted them to come west with the emigrant train and take up a homestead on the Huntley Project near Worden. Being a machinist by trade, farming didn't come easy to Mr. Hug, so to supplement his income, he worked several years for the Bureau of Reclamation at Ballantine. Mrs. Hug and Lena "took in" washing and ironing.
Lena spent the first six years of her education at the Porter School, which was located near the present Beck Guernsey Dairy. She later graduate from Worden High School. The family lived in a tent for the first year, then in a two-room dwelling until enough money could be saved to build a house. It was built in 1916 by Mr. E. A. Kraske, and is still standing on the original homestead. A son, Arthur, was born in 1914 and a daughter, Irene, was born in 1916.
The family decided to venture into the dairy business, and gradually accumulated a herd of Jersey cows. Mr. Hug's horse and buggy, loaded with bottles, was a familiar sight on the streets of Worden early each morning, winter and summer, rain or shine. In the late twenties he gave up the milk route but continued with the dairy business, selling cream to the Thompson Dairy in Billings until his retirement. Mr. Hug passed away on the homestead in November of 1958, and Mrs. Hug at the Laurel Nursing Home in February of 1966.
Lena Hug Sorenson lives in Dillon; Arthur on the homestead; and Irene is Mrs. Adam Kembel, living on a farm near Worden. [7]
