Following an early career as a migrant farm worker, Mr. Garza, moved to Gary, Indiana, in the late 1940's when Inland Steel solicited workers to help build and staff their facility in East Chicago, Indiana. Mr. Garza was initially provided company housing in a male dormitory setting and later his wife and 3 children, Joe, Frances and John, joined him in Gary. He worked for over 30 years at Inland before retiring. Off and on during these years the family continued their migrant farming during scheduled vacations, picking cheeries and apples in Michigan and tomatoes in Indiana. |
