Lawson Oliver Bittaker Sr. died on Sunday, February 12, 1978 when his Army OV1C Mohawk aircraft crashed in the woods on the opposite side of Highway 41 across from runway at Dobbins AFB, Marietta, Georgia. Lawson served as Tactical Observer on the aircraft which was piloted by Chief Warrant Office Brannon. Cause of the crash was later determined by investigating officials to be associated with engine maintenance preformed 27 hours earlier by Cumberland Army Depot. During the maintenance of the engine, glass pellets used in the shot peening process to clean the inside of the engine casing were not removed. Mr Brannon had over 20,000 hours of flying experience and was successful in navigating the vechicle to the wooded area and away from a crowded shopping area prior to crashing.Cemetery 15 Feb 1978 Macon, Bibb, Georgia, USA Macon Memorial Park Buried 15 Feb 1978 Macon Memorial Park, Macon, Bibb, Georgia, USA [2]
