According to Ancestry.com, Renold Berg, as he was known in the 1930 US Federal census, was actually named Reinhold Skymberg when he arrived in New York on 3 May 1903 at the age of 19, immigrating from Sweden. Interestingly, the transcribed passenger list from the ship, New York, spelled his name as Reinhold Skym (space) Berg (microfilm serial number T715, roll T715_250, page 22).

Renold is found in the 1910 US Federal census as Beinhold Berg [corrected to Reinhold Berg]in Duluth, St Louis, Minnesota with his wife Ellen. He was 25 and she was 23, married with one child.

In the 1920 US Federal census, Renold was named Renda Berg (transcription error assumed). He was living within 3 blocks of where he and his wife lived 10 years prior. He is now 35, his wife Elin, 33, and have 5 children: Stanley, 10; Russel, 5; Ruby Lillian, 3 4/12; Ruben L, 3 4/12; and Baby Berg (later to be know as Edith), 9 months old.

The 1930 US Federal Census finds Renold Berg residing in Gary, Indiana (age 46) along with his two sons Russell (age 16) and Stanley (age 21). All three were lodgers in what appears to be a boarding house on Adams Street. At this date, his wife, Elin, has not been located in the 1930 census. Reuben and and Edythe were living in the Children's Home Institution in Duluth, Minnesota during the 1930 census period (2 Apr 1930. It is believed that Ruben's twin, Ruby, died shortly after the 1920 census (2 Jan 1920). A death record has been located for what appears to be her but requires verification at this time (State File # 026611, record #299610 reflecting a 24 Mar 1920 death in Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota).

In researching Renold Berg, it was discovered that he had an older brother, Anders Henrik Skymberg (age 29), that immigrated to the US, arriving 29 Oct 1903 at the port of Boston. Anders brought with him his wife, Selma (22) and a son Torsten (age 7). According to the ship manifest, Anders was joining his brother Reinhold Berg at 230 West 6th St, Duluth, Minnesota.

It is interesting to note that Reinhold Skymberg had changed his name between May 3, 1903 and 29 Oct 1903 to Reinhold Berg. As common in the immigration process, many people changed their names to become either more Americanized or to make the pronunciation of their name easier. Many Swedish names contain berg in some form (i.,e., Berglund, Bergman, Berghold, etc). Many chose to drop the the last part of the surname and in doing so, the surname became Berg.

To add further interest, Anders Skymberg, was officially documented in the 1920 US Federal Census as Anders Berg and in the 1930 US Federal Census, was documented as Henry Berg.

According to census records for both brothers, they became Naturalized Citizens.

    Notes
    • Possible relative, Tycko Nikanor, age 21, border crossing from Canada to U.S. on 30 Jun 1914 from Quebec aboard the Empress of Britain, port of departure Liverpool, England. Stated destination was to Duluth, Minnesota. Subsequent search reveals a 1917 WWI Draft Registration Card for a Nikanor Skymberg, date of birth 9 Apr 1893, age 24. Draft location was Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin. Swedish birth records indicate that Tyrko Nikanor's parents are Nils Skymberg and Anna Charlotta Larsson. Comparison of birth date reveals that the Nikanor who came across the border from Canada is the same Nikanor born to Nils and Anna with birth location of Alnö, Västernorrland.
